The Natives grew up in that land, they know that land like the back of their hand. Settlers on the other hand didn't know nothing about the land, so they had to explore. Plus some settlers depended on Indians for their survival, the Indians taught the settlers new farming and hunting techniques in order for the settlers to survive on their own.
