This is the study of communication. Communication is it's own discipline within the social sciences which deals with the study of how humans convey messages to each other. Connotative meanings are meanings based on slang and emotion, and are relative to each speaker, while denotative meanings are literal, dictionary definitions. When the two are confused, this is easy fuel for misunderstandings.
