The answer is true. Melatonin is a hormone that is created by the pineal gland in animals and controls sleep and alertness. It seems to have 2 possible interacting effects on the sleep-wake cycle. First, it encourages sleep and stability in a “hypnotic” function by escalating the homeostatic coerce to sleep. Second, it entrains and modifies the process c in a “chronobiotic” function.
