What is a mineral, as geologists understand the term? how is the definition different from the everyday usage of the word?

Minerals are obviously going on, solid substances, formed by geologic process. The Geologists seem to hint in rocks uncovered near the surface, for example, the improvement process often results in discoloration of the soil and rock. So as to know the minerals that are a division of this larger group.
