In “jeremiah’s song,” why does macon spend so much time with grandpa jeremiah?

It might be understood that Macon spend so much time with grandpa Jeremiah because he respected the older man. Macon stated visiting Grandpa when he had a stroke . It might be added that his stories showed that a person can make it through hard times because somebody else had done it too.
