The surplus of food can supply a larger community of people. That means that families are able to reproduce and grow comfortable without the increase of people cause everyone to have less to eat. With abundant resources, ever member of the community will still get the same amount of food resources, without experiencing any deprivation, even with more mouths to feed with those same resources. That also eliminates the need to expand the food resources in order to make accommodations.
