What causes the bacteria to die in an extremely salty environment?

The effect to which salt concentration causes changes in bacterial growth depends on the osmotic balance required for growth. Some bacteria require a high level of salt to begin growth, whereas other bacteria would be immediately killed in high levels of salt.
