The Northwest Ordinances, which were enacted in 1784, 1785, and 1787 by the US Congress in order to orderly establish the procedures in order to guarantee the settlement and incorporation of the Northwestern Territory to the United States. Part of these acts separated the mentioned territories into "townships".
