What explanations does smith give for the loss men and his own capture?

Smith gives the explanation that the voyage took more than anticipated and they experience some sort of "risk" which was not in his or their plans. Aside from these bothers, in the new world they confronted the absence of food, no sanctuary and its results like disease and demise. He himself used a savage as a shield but was captured.
