Odysseus tries to rally him to fight the suitors, but Telemachus insists that he is powerless against them. He asks Eumaeus to tell Penelope and Laertes that he has returned safely, but not to let the suitors know. Athena appears to Odysseus as a tall woman and instructs him to disclose his true identity to his son.
