The power to tax citizens is an important expressed power for Congress. The ability to tax citizens allows the government to generate enough revenue in order to keep the government functioning. These tax dollars go to vital programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, military/defense spending, preserving national parks/ forests, etc. Without the ability to tax, the federal government would be very limited in their influence.
