The explorer's purpose was to search for a Northwest passage across North America to Asia particularly for the shipping of spices. They were not successful, but on one trip Hudson sailed into New York's harbor in 1609 and noted what an excellent harbor it was. His reports resulted in the many Dutch settlements in the area.
