Simply by use of the "mere exposure" effect, one's surroundings may shape their very outlook and world view. For example, someone who grew up in a positive homosexual household wouldn't think homosexuality was very strange at all. Yet, someone who has been taught that such a thing is wrong by all of their friends and loved ones would definitely lean more towards their way of thinking.
