The genre is a characteristics of the text; for example Drama, Epic, Novel, Satire are all genres. A short story is also a genre: so a genre can also for example be distinguished by length.

But the most general way of describing genre is it's general traits, for example in comparison to other works, so the correct answer is traits it has in common with other works
