At the time of the settlement of Jamestown, the English still feared raids by the Spanish. How does the position of the fort reflect that worry?

The fort was placed about 100 yards downstream from the deep water port the Colonists established to offload supplies from ships. This was done because the water was shallower there, thus prohibiting any Spanish or French warships from moving closer to the fort to bombard it at close range.
