Identify the reason why trials often end up with more jurors who are unemployed or retired than should be the case.

That is because people can choose to not be on jury and be excluded from Jury duty because they need to work or just don't care about it so they get an excuse. People who are unemployed or retired can't evade it as easily as employed people do, so they go and serve their duty.
