How did the draft challenge ideas about individual liberty in the North and in the South?

The draft made the argument that there was a larger good to be served by being a part of the armed forces, and that, during times of duress, individual liberty was secondary to serving those greater needs. The individual's belief in being their own person was to take a back seat to making sure that the nation survived.
