Julia ate 1 more slice which could also be written as she ate 1/8 more than Kyle. If you were to draw a diagram on lined paper and shade the eaten portions of both people, it is easier to visualize.

Julia ate 1 more slice than Kyle, because 1/2 of 8 is 4, and Kyle had 3 slices.
