What is the function of cholesterol in the plasma membrane?

This helps slightly immobilize outer surface of membrane and make it less soluble to very small water-soluble molecules that could otherwise pass through more easily in to the body.Without cholesterol,cell membrane would be the too fluid,not firm enough and too permeable to some molecules.
