Several million Irish migrated in the 1840s primarily because disastrous economic conditions pushed them out of the country.
At the time, Ireland wasn't a good place to live in because of many political and economic turmoils that pervaded the country. This was the reason why many Irish citizens decided to leave Ireland for good (or at least until it got better there) in order to pursue their happiness.
