Regarding natural selection, heritable variability is the driving force behind a population's change in characteristics. There must be variation in traits, and this variation must be heritable. The variability in characteristics must result in a variation in ability to survive. Those with certain traits must be favored for or favored against for natural selection to work. They can be adaptations that increase or maintain one's ability to survive.
