Why does analyzing character motivation matter?

Analyzing a characters motivation will establish where they lie in the conflict. For instance, in Macbeth we learn that Lady Macbeth is ambitious and willing to do anything in order for her husband to gain royal status. Therefore, as readers, we can conclude that she will do something negative to accomplish this. I hope that makes sense and helps.
