Why were northwest north americans like the chinookan able to create "complex" or "affluent" gathering and hunting cultures?

Their culture was based around the idea of manliness and being big and strong and alpha. Every male strove to be a great strong hunter so they devoted a lot of time and attention to it. It was also an area with luscious forests that were filled with animals so they had that going for them as well.
