8x - 2 = -5(2x + 6)...distribute the -5 thru the parenthesis
8x - 2 = -10x - 30 ...add 10x to both sides
8x + 10x - 2 = -30 ....add 2 to both sides
8x + 10x = -30 + 2 ...simplify
18x = - 28 ...divide both sides by 18
x = -28/18 which reduces to - 14/9 <==
