In a volcanic eruption there is an interaction between earth's interior, atmosphere and surface becuase lava is a product of magma, which is like a melt minerals soup in earth's interior; this magma ascends in different places of the earth (volcanoes), depending on the relationships between tectonic plates. When magma arrives to the surface we call it "lava". Lava starts to cool down because of its interaction with the atmosphere that is cold if we compare its temparature (~20°C) with lava's temperature (~1000°C). The product of lava's cooling process is a rock and its a result of an interaction between earth's interior, atmosphere and surface.
