The emancipation was issued on January, 1863. The purpose of the emancipation was to free all slaves in the south. It did not free all slaves because this only affected the confederates and not the union. It is seen as such an important symbolic measure because it gave blacks a chance to stand up for themselves. This further lead to more black rights such as joining the army, getting jobs, and influenced people such as Martin Luther King Junior.
