Adam Smith was a liberal thinker of the XVIII century. In his work An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, also known as The Wealth of Nations (which is considered the first book of modern economy), Adam Smith said that the Wealth of a nation is in its capacity to produce and trade goods and services, which means that the wealth of countries should be measured in productivity and exchange of goods and services.
