I believe the answer is: Be sure they would never be attacked again by a Western European country

During the world war II, Russia faced the most damage because they are the one that become the target of the Germany's main force ( which is the strongest country compared to other members of axis power).

Because of this, they focused their effort to no longer be attacked by western European by placing many military base all across their border.

Russia was not part of World War II until 1939 when they attacked Poland and it was brought to Russia when Germany invaded Russia in 1941.

Given all the previous circumstances as I see one of the main goals Russia had at the end of World War II, that they wanted to make sure, they would never be attacked again by a Western European country.
