Hollis and Charmaine are curious about which mode of transportation gets them from their apartment to the mall faster. Hollis takes public transportation and gets to the mall in 18.5 minutes. Charmaine rides her bike and gets to the mall in 0.5 hours. The mall is 2.4 miles away from their apartment. Use the formula for distance traveled, distance=rate⋅time, to find each rate of travel in miles per minute. What is the difference between Hollis' rate of travel on the bus and Charmaine's rate of travel on the bike? In other words, how much faster is it to take the bus in miles per minute? Enter your answer as a decimal, rounded to the nearest hundredth, if necessary, like this: 42.53 50 pts

Hollis travels 0.05 miles per minute faster than Charmaine. First, convert to the same units for both Hollis and Charmaine. So Hollis takes 18.5 minutes and Charmaine takes 0.5*60 = 30 minutes. Both girls travel 2.4 miles, so calculate how many miles per minute each takes Hollis = 2.4 / 18.5 = 0.13 miles per minute. Charmaine = 2.4 / 30 = 0.08 miles per minute. Finally determine the difference in speed between the two girls. 0.13 - 0.08 = 0.05 miles per minute.
