Both the enlightenment and the great awakening challenged religion, but from different point of views. The Enlightenment was a scientific thinking point of view, while the Great Awakening was from a Christian point of view. Enlightenment was intellectual/scientific movement while the Great Awakening was a religious movement embracing pietism. Both spread through printed information: the enlightenment through print from Franklin and other non religious newsprint, while the great Awakening supplied demand for devotional readings, George Whitefield traveled and sent excerpts of his journals to be printed in newspapers, along with alot more.
