By merging many of the independent colonies situated in New England into one large colony King James I was able to more tightly control what the colonists were doing. Largely he wished to more easily encourage the colonists to abide by the Navigation Acts, legislation that essentially prohibited the colonists from trading with any non-British entity. Additionally, it allowed him to more easily increase the revenues provided to Britain by the colonists.
