Edward maria Wingfield ( 1550 - 1631 ) was the first president of the council of Virginia. Captain John Smith ( 1580 - 1631 ) thought that Wingfield was not a good leader. He thought that he was unable to keep the peace among the settlement`s leaders. They clashed and Wingfild was sent back to England.
