When the size of the figure in a composition is emphasised in proportion to denote importance this is known as Hieratic Scale. This was often used in Renaissance painting and Sculpture in artworks which used imagery of Greek and Roman gods, or Christian icons such as God, the trinity, the apostles and other key figures in scripture.
