It separated Germany into two groups, one controlled by Russia and one controlled by the other allied powers of WW2. The literal divide separated family, city, country, and most importantly the divide in Governing techniques. With communist Russia controlling the eastern portion of Berlin and America/ Great Britain controlling the western portion with Democracy, tensions began to stir leading to the cold war due to this "Iron Curtain".
