Renaissance art used more developed techniques like shading and a better understanding of color theory to bring paintings to life. Many artists like leonardo da vinci and michael angelo also implemented their knowledge of human anatomy to better achieve a more realistic approach to art. I guess this reflects the ideals of the time period since they wanted a new change from the lifeless 2D paintings that had existed previously to a more 3 D perspective. Hope this helps.
