In democratic societies, citizens get to choose their leaders and make other choices about how they are governed.

This is true. Leaders in democratic societies are chosen by the means of an election, and when important things about governing are being made, the country has a referendum vote where everyone votes on something important. If it's not that important, then the leader decides.
