Many of our current laws are directly derived from Roman law. For example, "trial by jury," which is a common feature of the American legal system, can be traced back to Roman law. In Rome, when the accuser faced the death penalty, he might be tried in front of people from the community. Another example is the presumption of innocence. This means that the accused is assumed to be innocent until proven guilty.
