Gills are used for respiration by fish and other organisms that live in an aquatic environment. Water is forced over the gill surface and blood flowing in the gills pick up oxygen via diffusion. The amount of oxygen that passes through the plasma membrane of the gills is directly related to its surface area. Therefore any part of the fish gill is affected and is not able to accommodate diffusion will reduce oxygen uptake.
