The Great Plains referred to here is the wide, flat expanse area of land between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. It was the Homestead Act of 1862 that settled the problems concerning property ownership. The Act states that a transfer of 160 acres of land will be transferred to each homesteader provided that they pay a nominal fee after 5 years of residence.
