Since the end of the Chinese civil war Taiwan and China have had diplomatic battles over who is the legitimate government of both places. In 1979 the International Olympic Committee passed a resolution requiring Taiwan to be called Chinese Taipei at international sporting events and their athletes are not allowed to carry their flag or have their national anthem played.
