a-6= 8-(9+a)

Distribute -1
a-6= 8-9-a

Combine like terms
a-6= -1-a

Add a to both sides
2a-6= -1

Add 6 to both sides
2a= 5

Divide both sides by 2
a= 5/2

Final answer: a=5/2
