Emperor Justinian I was emperor of the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century. During his reign, one of the deadliest plagues in history, called Plague of Justinian, which was caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis (same bacterium responsible for the bubonic plague) wiped out much of the kingdom. Although Justinian contracted it himself, he survived.
