In Act 1 Scene 2, Romeo is comforted by Benvolio, who is lovesick over Rosaline. He tries to ease the pain of loving someone that does not love you back. By caring for Romeo, Benvolio supports the archetype of devoted friend.

In act 1, scene 2, we find that Romeo is in love with a woman named Rosaline. He is devastated at the impossibility of being with her. Benvolio is listening and supporting Romeo. He tries to convince him that it is possible to forget her, while being understanding of Romeo's pain. He also suggests to him to keep his options open. They are about to go to a feast where many women will be present. Benvolio tells Romeo that this will be a good opportunity for him to compare Rosaline to other women.
