Why was the addition of land important to Thomas Jefferson's plan for the U.S. economy?

This was called Westward expansion. It provided land for agriculture. this was important because he wanted America to be all agriculture and less factories. It doubled the size of America as well as gave us control of the Port of New Orleans.
