How were kinship and clan membership important to the structure of native american societies?

People organized their local governments around kinship and clan belonging. They would be like families and take care of each other and provide food and protect the children and so on. The medicine men would also know everything about families and their lines so they could heal them better if need be. They were like small states based around the idea of kinship.
