What's happens to biomass as you move up the biomass pyramid

the amount of energy decreases. the top of the pyramid always has the least amount of energy and the bottom of the pyramid has the most amount of energy.

  • Biomass is the mass of material in living organism. It is usually measured as dry mass of biological material in grams. A biomass of organisms at different levels of a food chain can be shown in a pyramid of biomass.
  • The biomass of in each trophic level is always less than the trophic level below because not all organisms at one stage are eaten by the same stage above. Some material and energy is passed out as waste by the organism. Some of the energy is used for growth.
  • Therefore, biomass and energy decreases as you move up the biomass pyramid from one trophic level to the next.
