Tranquilizers used to sedate the body tend to cause more severe loss of control of the muscles than other types of tranquilizers. Examples are the drugs Nembutal and Seconal. A tranquilizer acts on the CNS or the central nervous system which functions to calm or decrease anxiety of a person. They are classified under depressants as they suppress the CNS and slow down the body.

Loss in motor control

Tranquilizers used for sedation, such as Seconal or Nembutal, affect the central nervous system and look to decrease the person's muscular activity. This leads to decreased motor control. Contrarily, anxiety relieving tranquilizers, such as Valium and Xanax, do not cause as severe a loss in motor control but leave stronger effects of aggression.
