When mixed with water, IONIC COMPOUNDS break into ions, but NON-POLAR MOLECULES DOES NOT.
When mixed with water, ionic compounds been polar, will dissolve in water and form positive and negative ions which are called cations and anions respectively and in this form, they can conduct electricity. Non polar molecules on the other hand do not dissolve in water.
