Why did the Confederates take the offensive so soon after they saved Richmond? It was more suited to Lee's personality.

Lee believed that if he could destroy the Army of the Potomac (or a significant portion of it) on Union soil, either public opinion in the North would force Lincoln to make a negotiated peace that recognized the CSA as a sovereign,independent country,or Britain and France would officially recognize the CSA,which would have the same effect.
