Because of lack of punctuation and rhyme scheme, we can read the whole poem as one sentence, written in an almost conversational style. The poem has a stanzaic structure, but it is undermined by the lack of punctuation, so we don't even need to know where one stanza ends and the next one begins. Thus, we get a string of miniature images that get lined up before our eyes, and we aren't distracted by any sound patterns, as we would have been in more traditional poetry. Williams has sought to liberate poetry from the constricting poetic traditions of language, sound, and style.
